Entrepreneurial success behind the scenes.. or what we’ve learned from successful startup gurus

We’ve been exhibiting at this conference recently, it’s called StartCon and it’s the biggest startup conference in Australia.

While there I had the privilege to attended this amazing talk by Antonio Garcia Martinez who is the author of the book, Chaos Monkeys and he is also one of the first producers of the Facebook ad product as we know it today.

We also had the privilege of having a one-on-one session with Matt Gallagher from Watch Gang. What an amazing opportunity!!

Antonio was taking us through success journeys of lots of startups and businesses out there and what’ the reality about their success.

“Quite often, we only see the shining success on the outside and we never actually see the failures and the hard work that entrepreneurs go through to get to that success and generate those results.“

For me, it really hit home because quite often, like many of other entrepreneurs, I hustle, I work late nights, I work weekends (even this conference was on a weekend) and it’s not always easy to start seeing results straight away.

What Antonio was talking about was that it’s actually not about that success you see but it’s about the ability to try many things, fail fast, pivot quickly, get rid of the things that don’t work and find something else that works. It’s about recognising when something doesn’t work and trying a new way from there onwards.

So that message was so amazing because it made me realise that behind every great success, there is obviously those failures and everyday hard work but if we’re consistent and persistent enough, the success will always follow.

At the conference, we also had the privilege of having a one-on-one session with Matt Gallagher from Watch Gang. What an amazing opportunity!!

Matt is an amazing guy who started his business 13 months ago and has gained 22,000 active members to date. The story of his journey was awe-inspiring.

The one thing that we took out of his message was that we can’t be everything to everyone and being specific on who you’re focusing on is the secret ingredient in gaining traction.

He was saying that every entrepreneur who wants to be successful needs to have specific language, specific communications to his/her target audience and one thing to avoid is trying to be everything to everyone and spreading ourselves too thin.

It was nice to validate the message. Even taking that message to us, to Bright Cherry, thinking about how we think we need to always specifically address our audience.

It’s indeed true that us entrepreneurs spread ourselves too thin because revenue is so important to us that we don’t want to lose any opportunity to earn some, right?

And so instead of focusing on the right thing and channeling that energy into a specific niche, entrepreneurs just spread themselves thin and so, basically his message was “Guys, make sure what your niche is and channeling your energy into that.”

So guys, keep trying new things, find out what works and make sure to channel your energy to a specific niche because even with small marketing budget that will deliver high return. There is always space for one more amazing entrepreneur, but you’ve got to be really specific because being everything to everyone no longer works.
